The importance of a good headshot - BRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO

Headshots and personal branding photography. A guide to why it is important to have a professional headshot for your business profile.

A good headshot offers a glimpse into who you are, what you do, and why you do it. It is a visual connection that offers people a chance to put a face to your name, and it’s incredibly important for any business or brand. There are many factors that go into a headshot portrait, from posing and lighting to angles and editing, and that’s why it’s important to make the investment in a professional if you want the absolute best results.  Good images are important and you and your business deserve them.

Whether you’re a small business owner, a freelancer, a blogger, or an Instagram influencer, actor, performer, author, having a uniquely recognizable personal brand is crucial. Your personal brand is what sets you apart from all the rest in an environment that’s more competitive than ever. It’s how you can instantly communicate your experience, skills, and personality to your potential clients and audience.

5 Reasons why you need a good headshot:

  1. A good headshot conveys professionalism to potential collaborators.
  2. A quality headshot can set you apart from the competition.
  3. A professional headshot showcases your unique personality.
  4. It helps potential clients connect with you instantly.
  5. A good headshot helps with networking, people will remember who you are

More Than One Look for Your Headshot

While headshots are intended to present a professional appearance, there is more than one way to make your headshot work. Headshots reflect your personality, your identity, and your brand. However, there is more than one use for a headshot. Headshots can be used for your resume, LinkedIn profile, company directory, an audition, or your own business website.

Depending on how you plan to use your headshots, you will need to select a look that appeals to your audience. For instance, your company directory may require a more formal look than your LinkedIn profile, which allows for a more relaxed feel.

Check out these examples for different headshot styles and their uses:

*Casual and friendly style for the business owner who wants to give off an inviting and approachable look.

*Fun, not-so-corporate style for your start-up tech company whose target audience is a more youthful crowd.

*Professional and qualified style for the applicant who intends to land a CEO position in a law firm or other large company.

Characteristics of a Good Headshot

You have your look, you have chosen your photographer, and you have booked your photo session. Now how do you ensure that your headshots reflect the vibe you want, are of high quality and will help you stand out from the crowd? These are five characteristics of a great headshot. If you stick to these simple rules, you will leave your session with headshots you love.

  • Clean and simple – The goal of a headshot is to show who you are in a professional manner. The best way to do this is to keep your headshots clean and simple, with nothing to distract from you.
  • Confidence and approachability – Visibly showing off your personality in your headshot demonstrates self-confidence, which automatically leads others to feel confident in you as well.
  • Smile your eyes! This goes without saying, but real smiles radiate a genuine vibe that will attract your audience.
  • Personality & make-up – Make sure your headshots look like you. Do not overdo it with makeup, hair, or clothing. Just be unapologetically you!
  • Conservative colors – By wearing conservative colors, the focus stays on you, your smile, and your personality.

Getting Ready for Your Headshot Session

Our mission is to provide you with photos that convey who you are; showcase the professional skills, talents, and value you have to offer; and help you stand out from your competition. Here’s how we’ll do that:

After you’ve gone through our portfolio and decided you like what you see, set up a free phone or in-person consultation with us. We’ll get to know you better, ask you questions about your story and brand, figure out how we can best serve you, and suggest a customised photo package to best fit your needs. You’ll also have the chance to ask any additional questions you may have.

We can take a couple of different shots—in different outfits—so you’ll have a series to choose from. You may want to tailor your profile picture based on the social media platform you’re using. Remember to have fun! A relaxed, comfortable subject naturally exudes confidence.

What to Wear

It’s important that your look matches the image you’re trying to convey.  What you wear on a daily basis is a great place to start. Solid colors are always a good choice, as are tops with strong collars and necklines. Even though you’ll only be shot from the shoulders up, it’s important you’re pulled together from head to toe—you may want a shot or two that are pulled back a bit. Aim for clothes that complement your skin and eye tones and, overall, steer clear of very bold colors.

To compliment your photo session we also offer photo enhancement and retouching services. Because headshots offer a close-up view of your face, we’ll work on any skin imperfections and blemishes where necessary.  Any editing that is done will be subtle and your photos will still look very natural.

Personal Branding I Who can benefit?

Business portrait of female entrepreneur, editorial portraits.

As Forbes puts it, “Whether you know it or not, you have a personal brand.” In this highly digital, competitive day and age, how you come across to people matters. Building a personal brand is all about controlling the conversation — intentionally crafting a persona that’s true to you and puts you in the very best light.

So, here’s who can benefit from a personal brand photoshoot:

Any professional

Having a thoughtful, solidified brand is valuable to any working professional. Your personal brand is what sets you apart from the competition. Having professional yet approachable personal brand photos on your website, social media, and business cards will help other people remember you and get to know you.

Small business owners/freelancers

If you own your own business or are self-employed, having a distinct personal brand is everything. It’ll help potential clients connect with you instantly. After all, people don’t want to work with faceless companies — they want to work with friendly, trustworthy, real people.

A personal branding photoshoot is a great way to build a bank of like-worthy new content for your social media feed, blog, or email newsletters. It’ll also help you connect with your audience on a more personal level.

Headshots are vitally important to building your acting career. A good headshot is a key to breaking in as a professional actor. Without the right headshot, the chances of being discovered or noticed are small, regardless of how talented you are. We will create memorable images that will help you stand out and be seen.
